I might be crazy for mentioning Donald Trump this close to a highly-charged election, but there’s a lesson to be learned from him.
This lesson is applicable whether you think he’s the best thing since sliced bread or you believe he’s The Antichrist and should be in prison …
Donald Trump wouldn’t have been elected to the White House in 2016 without being able to grab a lot of attention.
He sucked the oxygen out of the room when running against 16 other Republicans for the party’s nomination, and beat ones with much more political experience and operational strength than he had.
And then he received an estimated $2 Billion to $5 Billion in free media during the general election, which helped him beat Hillary.
And the media has continued to focus on him every single minute since he took office (turn on any news channel now and chances are they’re talking about Trump).
This grasping of attention was all planned.
Way back in 2013, a group of political operatives met with Trump and tried to convince him to run for governor of New York. Trump declined the offer, and told them instead that he wanted to run for President in the future. He laid out his plan to them:
“I’m going to walk away with it and win it outright … I’m going to get in and all the polls are going to go crazy. I’m going to suck all the oxygen out of the room. I know how to work the media in a way that they will never take the lights off of me.’”
Although there could be such a thing as over-exposure and too much attention (if the current election polls are to be believed), coaches can benefit from having the glow of the spotlight on them as well.
You need to have eyeballs on you, and your name on people’s tongues, to get the cash register ringing.
