HELPING COACHES GET MORE CLIENTS SINCE 2014!

Public service announcement: I’m not perfect

by | Mar 17, 2017 | Blog

I like to keep things loose and candid in The Coaching Jungle Facebook group.

I don’t want a boring, blah group that puts people to sleep (there are enough of those on FB already)

So I’m not afraid to make an ass of myself if it lightens the mood and gets people engaged in there.

This week I told the group about something embarrassing that happened to me at the local movie theatre last week when Julia and I went to see the movie Get Out.

It wasn’t my best moment, and you can read about it here:

But mixing it up and admitting that you aren’t perfect isn’t something that the gurus do.

A lot of people in the online space try to position themselves like gods.

Nothing ever goes wrong for them: they wake up at 4 am every day, run 10 miles, scale a mountain, and then come home to make love to their perfect partner. Then they’re off to help create world peace. Life is a breeze, and if you buy their program, yours will be too (or so the thinking goes)

But they’re missing something …

Admitting that you aren’t perfect will actually help bond you to your people.

Life can be pretty messy here on my end. We’re talking about a past that includes business closure, breakdown of a marriage, and being a Toronto Maple Leafs fan since I was 6 years old (for non-Canadians, the Leafs haven’t won the Stanley Cup since 1967, and we hapless Leafs fans are teased mercilessly because of it).

The funny thing is the day that I made that embarrassing story post in my group, I got a private message from someone who I’ve never spoken with before.

She thanked me for posting it, and for being open with the group (she said she doesn’t see that happen often online).

I thought that was pretty cool.

Here’s a challenge for you: share something vulnerable with your people today. Ignore the little voice telling you that you have to act perfect, and just share it.

Being open is a great way to show vulnerability and build bonds.

It works especially well in Facebook groups, since so few group owners do it.

If you show some of your faults, people will relate to you and become raving fans.

On Monday, I’m going to be showing how you can use your Facebook group to increase your credibility, get more clients and customers, change the world, and all that good stuff. Here’s the link to save your spot:
