I watched a video the other day detailing the struggles of Megyn Kelly since she moved from Fox News to NBC.
Kelly was with Fox for over a decade, and she became a big name (especially after her feud with Donald Trump). It seemed like the sky was the limit when she was offered her own show on NBC – where she’s now making a cool $17 million a year.
But about a month into it, Kelly has stumbled out of the gate. She’s had a number of awkward moments, and the ratings reflect that the audience just isn’t into her (her time slot is down 32% from this time last year).
The problem that Megyn Kelly is having is she’s trying to go from being a hard-hitting, often-controversial political commentator on Fox to a warm and fuzzy morning show host on NBC.
She became well-known for her tough questioning of guests, and now she’s dancing and fooling around with the lighter fare that comes with morning tv.
Kelly has made a mistake that I see a lot of coaches make in the online world:
She’s not being herself.
I see coaches who are soft-spoken try to curse like sailors and drop F-bombs to look “real” and “edgy”.
On the flip side, those who are usually more crude try to clean it up and talk differently.
People can tell when you aren’t being yourself.
You’re better off talking and writing like you do “in real life” than putting a mask on.
When I first started coaching, I was holding back and not being my true self.
I was afraid of ruffling feathers and offending potential clients.
Once I took the filter off and just let it out, my business took off.
And I felt a lot better about what I was doing.
