HELPING COACHES GET MORE CLIENTS SINCE 2014!

Contenders, Pretenders, and Also-Rans

by | Apr 22, 2017 | Blog

I’m a bit of a political junkie.

I don’t sit on Facebook arguing about politics, but I pay attention to elections and leadership races, and I’m currently listening to a 16 hour audiobook outlining where Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign went wrong.

Nerdy, I know …

Right now, there’s a leadership race happening for the Conservative party here in Canada.

I check in on the race daily to see what’s happening (one of the leading candidates is Kevin O’Leary, of Shark Tank fame, so that keeps things interesting).

The main website that I use to keep tabs on it is Bourque Newswatch, and it has a page dedicated solely to the race that puts one of three labels on each of the 14 candidates:

– Contender (O’Leary is one of the four)
– Pretender (there are two of them)
– Also-Ran (a whopping 8 candidates fall in here)

As in politics, there are Contenders, Pretenders, and Also-rans in the coaching world.

Contenders are coaches who treat this like a real business. They show up when they’re supposed to show up, they invest to grow their businesses and are constantly improving their skills. They’re serious about what they do, and it shows.

Pretenders may look like they have their act together, but they don’t. They probably look good on the surface (with nice websites and marketing, and decent social media followings), but they miss some appointments, are inconsistent with their efforts, and aren’t in the same league as the Contenders.

Then there are the Also-Rans. These are the people who jump into coaching and expect to cobble together some free advice, but won’t invest a penny to get help. They’re usually interested in magic funnels that will help them make 7 figures in a few months. When that doesn’t happen, they’re off to find another Get-Rich-Quick thing.

I’ve had the opportunity to interview many Contenders with my podcast (almost 500 of them) and I can spot them a mile away now.

One common trait amongst all of them is they weren’t afraid to get help when they were getting started. They invested in masterminds, coaching programs, conferences or they found mentors. They knew that they’d have to invest something to get off the ground.

I’m grateful to have a lot of Contenders in my Secret Coach Club. They aren’t afraid to invest (it’s a few bucks a day to be in SCC), and it shows with their results.
