Choosing a social media platform

by | Aug 10, 2017 | Blog

A coach recently asked this question in the Facebook group:

Can anyone help me decide on a social media platform?

When it comes to social media platforms, it can all be a little daunting.

You hear good arguments for all of them, as “experts” proclaim that you have to be on their preferred one if you want to take your business to the next level.

Here’s the thing: you can’t be on all of them, or you won’t be able to put enough energy into any one to make a real dent.

You have to choose the one that gels best with you (and where your target clients hang out, obviously).

For me, Facebook is that place. I have almost 60,000 Twitter followers and my LinkedIn isn’t bad, but I don’t put as much energy into there.

Facebook is where it’s at for me because I’m comfortable in that space, and my people are on there.

That’s not to say that I put all of my eggs in that basket, because who knows if it’ll be the same in five years? (Personally, I prefer email marketing, since I have more control over it and know that Mark Zuckerberg can’t do anything to mess it up).

In the last year or so I’ve gotten off social media that I don’t like and felt was wasting my time.

I stopped doing Pinterest (I use the word “doing” loosely. since I didn’t do much on there to begin with). I know some people do well with it, but it’s just not my thing.

I got off Google Plus, because it felt dead for me and I didn’t see any results after a year of doing it.

I jumped off Instagram, since I wasn’t feeling it (I still have an account, and that’s one platform that I haven’t given up on – I could go back).

When choosing a social media network, pick one that you like using. If you’re not having fun with it, it’ll be harder to get traction.

And don’t get too hung up on social media, since things change quickly online. Yours might not be around tomorrow …

If you’d like to connect with me on Facebook the best place to do it is in my group, The Coaching Jungle. There are almost 7000 coaches learning and growing in there every day:
