Daniel Day-Lewis, three-time Oscar winner and widely considered the best actor of his time, just announced his retirement.
I’ve always had respect for people who have the guts to go out when they’re on top (like Jerry Seinfeld and his sitcom) rather than ones who overstay their welcome.
One thing that DDL was known for was his meticulous preparation for the roles that he took on. He took years to get into the right mindset for a role, and he would “become” that character (ie: in Lincoln and There Will Be Blood)
He didn’t grab just any role that he was offered. If he wasn’t retiring, you wouldn’t have seen him starring in Dumb and Dumber 3 or Nightmare on Elm Street 17.
He took his occupation seriously, and he wasn’t content to just “phone it in” for a paycheque.
Coaches can take a page from his book and strive to be the best that we can be.
